While ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ has its moments of brilliance, it doesn’t quite recapture the magic of the first installment. The humor, pacing, and storytelling leave much to be desired, but the spectacular visuals and well-choreographed action make it a decent watch for fans of the franchise.

With the film strictly for fans of the video game series, or of anthropomorphic creatures who walk and talk like wise-cracking Hollywood heroes, others going into Sonic 3 be warned: ‘Happy Bearth Day’, playing on both ‘birth-day’ as well as the day Sonic landed on Earth, is the extent of its wit.

Jim Carrey is the film star; of course, he is the biggest name tied to a live-action character, in this case, Dr. Robotnik, and he does well at giving one of his signature performances. Sonic 3 can still feel dumb, cringy, and cliché at times, but it is also a very solid family film, filled with a story that works, characters that undergo change and development, and amazing action sequences that are entertaining to watch and respectful of everything that the source material has offered fans for decades. Sonic 3 is the best Sonic film to date, but with another sequel surely on the way, it seems it won’t hold that title for very long.

Pat Casey and Josh Miller’s story is quite good and thrilling. Pat Casey, Josh Miller and John Whittington’s screenplay is very pacy and gripping. But it doesn’t leave much scope for humour. On the whole, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 3 is a decent entertainer. The film’s advance ticket sales are encouraging and hence, it has a chance to score at the box office in this dry period.

The previous Sonic the Hedgehog films managed to strike a balance between humor, action, and heartfelt moments, but this installment struggles with excess. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 delivers plenty of action, laughs, and colorful chaos, but it struggles to maintain focus amidst its frenetic pace and overindulgence in comedic antics. While fans of the franchise may enjoy the spectacle, newcomers might find the experience overwhelming. Ultimately, the film’s charm lies in its characters, particularly the enigmatic Shadow, who offers a glimpse of the narrative potential that sometimes gets lost in the shuffle. If you’re a fan of Sonic and his crew, this high-energy sequel will likely entertain, but for those seeking a more grounded story, the film’s frenzied nature might be a bit too much.
