A visual spectacle… Desi-at-heart content… Impactful voiceovers [SRK specifically]… Pacing and songs dilute the impact… Watch it on the biggest screen possible. I’ve always been a huge admirer of #TheLionKing, and the latest installment, MufasaTheLionKing – a prequel to the iconic original – lives up to expectations for the most part. On the flip side, the pacing dips intermittently, while the songs contribute precious little to the goings-on.

A whirlwind, more like it. For, this film directed by Jenkins of Moonlight fame has a lot going on, from giving us at least three back stories (of Mufasa, Scar and Rafiki), to lessons on what real courage and real royalty means, to a blossoming romance that comes accompanied with a song. As this particular circle completes its life, what you are left yearning for is that knot that it promised to unravel — the story of Scar — but finally shies away from doing. A cold, cold Kiros croons: “Circle of Life is a lie, a pretty way of saying there are predators and prey.” Mufasa: The Lion King, where nary a drop of blood is spilled, ultimately chooses that too — the pretty way.

The plot of Mufasa looks like a typical Bollywood plot from the 80s and 90s. However, the astounding visuals give you an immersive experience. For me, the biggest letdown of the film is that it just brushes through the characters without exploring the emotional dynamics and depth. Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa is enjoyable but nowhere close to The Lion King. The narrative is uniform without any high points, which somewhat makes it a draggy affair. Talking about the voiceovers, every actor has done their part to the T but for me, the show stealer was Mads Mikkelsen with his impactful and vicious voice of villain Kiros. On the whole, Mufasa is a one-time watch only if you don’t compare it with its sequel. For the unversed, Shah Rukh Khan voices the Hindi version of Mufasa: The Lion King

The 1994 animated classic, The Lion King, remains a cherished favourite for its iconic storytelling, unforgettable music, and stellar voice performances. Mufasa: The Lion King is a visual treat that immerses audiences in a beautifully rendered world. Its stunning CGI, aesthetic appeal, and engaging performances captivate, and make for an experience worth having on the big screen.

Mufasa, directed by Barry Jenkins in English, sees Shah Rukh Khan returning as Mufasa, while Aryan Khan voices Simba. However, this time, AbRam makes his debut as young Mufasa. When it comes to musicals, no one does it like Bollywood. Disney India has successfully infused this international film with a distinctly desi flavour, making it an even more enjoyable experience than the English version. Mufasa in Hindi is a must-watch, with its vibrant, family-centric storytelling, strong performances, and unforgettable music.
