Mickey 17 is no Parasite and, while it falls in the science-fiction category, it’s no Snowpiercer either. South Korean director Bong Joon Ho’s latest film still dabbles with exploration of class and how removed are the top 1%, but it has too many ideas mixed up for one clear picture. Mickey 17 cheats on a question that engages not just everyone on this spaceship but home planet Earth and the wider universe. ‘What does it feel like to die?’ they ask Mickeys 1 to 17. Sixteen deaths later, all he has to say is that it is “painful” – nothing more.

Ultimately, Mickey 17 feels like a missed opportunity. Bong Joon Ho’s skill as a filmmaker is undeniable, but here, the story doesn’t have the emotional depth or coherent narrative structure needed to match his directorial talents. It’s a clever idea with too many competing elements, resulting in a movie that’s more forgettable than impactful.

All-in-all, Mickey 17 balances absurdity with poignant commentary, creating a compelling narrative despite the oddities. Bong Joon Ho won a Best Picture Oscar for his last effort Parasite but Mickey 17 doesn’t quite match up to it. It’s nevertheless a timely reminder of how forced colonisation, still rampant in many parts of the world, draconian laws and dictatorial leaders are in essence making us less human everywhere.

Mickey 17 works well as a black comedy, but when it shifts into more serious territory, it struggles and feels oddly quirky. The film gives the impression that Bong Joon Ho lost direction midway, and by the time it reaches the climax, it seems uncertain about where to go. While it excels in many aspects of filmmaking, a more structured narrative that stayed in sync with the film’s strong opening could have made it a far more engaging experience.

Mickey 17 is ambitious, thought-provoking, and anchored by a phenomenal performance from Robert Pattinson. While this film may not be as narratively complex as Joon-ho’s previous films, it makes up for it with its razor-sharp social commentary. So, if you’re looking for a sci-fi film that leaves you questioning your own existence, you wouldn’t want to miss this one.
