Kanu Behl’s direction caters only to a thin section of the audience whom one refers to as class audience. Sneha Khanwalkar’s background music is appealing. Siddharth Diwan’s cinematography is quite nice. On the whole, Despatch is too ordinary to make a universal mark. It might appeal to the elite audience but that’s about all.

Despatch is a film that had all the ingredients for success – a talented lead actor, a promising premise, and a potentially thought-provoking storyline. Unfortunately, it falls short due to a poorly constructed script and a lack of focus in its storytelling. For viewers looking for a nuanced take on journalism or a gripping drama, Despatch is unlikely to meet expectations. Instead, it serves as a reminder that even the best actors cannot save a film that lacks a solid foundation.

Behl crafts the film in a manner that does not spell out Joy’s compulsions, predicaments and impulses in bold relief. And that, more than anything else makes Despatch a deft chronicle of a slow death foretold – of a doughty man and the brand of journalism he has built his career around.

Despite lacking dynamism, he pursues the story with unrelenting determination. Shahana Goswami (in a short role), Arrchita Agarwaal, and Rii Sen deliver powerful performances. Despatch is effective in its depiction of crime journalism and explores the value of information that can save or end lives. Despite its pace and sombre vein, it’s a worthy one-time watch.

Despatch is a film that demands a lot of patience. It is also a film that never rewards that patience with a sense of release. All of it seems intentional to create an experience that is not exactly gripping or even minutely reminiscent of a tout journalism-thriller.
