Director Laxman Utekar builds his historical on a massive canvas, giving the film the larger than life appeal it deserves. The film starts off with promise and a grand slowmo entry but the first half lacks an engaging story beyond the obvious reverence. Chhaava’s excellence lies in its gripping second half and a terrific climax. Vicky Kaushal is breathtaking as he exudes Sambhaji Maharaj’s valour and passion for swaraj like it were his second skin. You just wish the film relied and trusted its solid story more than Rahman’s music, which largely feels out of place.

The climax is one of the most disturbing and violent endings you will see on the big screen. If you have watched Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ, it’s that level of brutality and torture. The intent is to showcase the extent of his allegiance to his people and land, but the visuals are not for the faint-hearted. Watch it for Vicky’s performance. His commitment to his craft is unparalleled. Chhaava doesn’t aim to be exceptionally different, but it masters the art of navigating the mainstream waters without completely drowning in the cacophony of its own voice.

Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films has brought exceptional cinematic experience with Chhaava, which perfectly blends historical grandeur with modern storytelling and ensuring that every frame is as visually striking as it is emotionally impactful. On the whole, Chhaava is a cinematic experience, which should be witnessed on the big screen for star performances and above all to know about the great life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.

A.R. Rahman’s evocative soundtrack is reminiscent of his Bollywood classics and deserves special mention. Dialogues like “Maut ke ghungroo pehenke nachte hai” and “Jab tu marega, Mughal mar jaega” resonate powerfully, while Diana Penty’s line, “Maut ka jashn woh mana rahe aur hum zindagi ka matam,” adds weight. The climax dazzles with its narrative intensity and stunning visuals. While Utekar’s storytelling could have been tighter, his attempt is commendable. Most notably, Chhaava unveils a fierce, unrelenting Vicky Kaushal in a historical saga.
