Hardcore mass entertainer packaged with striking action pieces… Boasts of some solid, clapworthy moments, despite tried-and-tested formula… VarunDhawan, in mass mode, in super form. SalmanKhan’s cameo elevates the film’s energy. An electrifying performance that is guaranteed to draw whistles and claps. BabyJohn is released during the Christmas and #NewYear period, which should boost its prospects… It is primarily targetted at mass audiences.

Imagine being served a buffet filled with an overdose of masala food that leaves your palate bewildered. Varun Dhawan’s Baby John is exactly that, Baby John could either benefit from the withdrawal symptoms fans are experiencing after Pushpa 2: The Rule or lose the battle to Allu Arjun’s mass-actioner.

Varun Dhwan has done a good job as an action hero, the show stellar is undoubtedly Jackie Shroff, but Wamiqa Gabbi is hugely underused in the film. the biggest surprise indeed is Salman Khan’s cameo with his trademark swag. Making a masala film is also an art and when you have a tough competition from Pushpa 2 which is still reigning the big screens. The biggest low was the two hours 40 minutes runtime.

Now, after an year, the director is back again but as a producer with Baby John, an adaptation of his own hit Theri. Atlee has reintroduced Varun Dhawan in a never seen before avatar in this mass commercial actioner, backed by strong emotions and a stunning Keerthy Suresh in her Bollywood debut. The mass commercial actioner is directed by Kalees, who retains the Atlee flavour and adds his own style into the mix. It should lift off the Christmas curse from the Hindi film industry as the last few films released on this festive season failed to bring audiences to the theatres. Baby John is the perfect masala entertainer that the Bollywood needed to round off a rather disappointing year.

Varun Dhawan impresses, balancing a dual role as a caring father and a fearless cop. His performance adds depth and conviction to the otherwise predictable narrative. Wamiqa Gabbi impresses with her screen presence, though her character’s background as an undercover cop remains unexplored. Rajpal Yadav as constable Sevakram and Jacky, John’s trusted aide, is a delightful surprise, offering more than just comic relief. Jackie Shroff’s menacing Nana leaves a lasting impression, making the most of his screen time. The movie has its moments as an actioner, but in terms of content and narrative, it could have been more impactful.
