Anil Sharma’s direction is not of the kind which will suck the audience into the drama. Scenes are often lengthy and boring. Mithoon’s music (one song composed by Monty Sharma) is alright and although the songs are melodious, they are not popular. On the whole, Vanvaas is a very boring fare which will not cut ice with the public. Neither the family audience nor the youth will appreciate the film which will prove to be a non-starter in the final tally.

Vanvaas addresses an important subject but leans heavily on a preachy tone to deliver its message. Nana Patekar’s dialogues, peppered with references to Karl Marx and BR Ambedkar, often veer into excessive moralizing, which can become tiresome. The film is laden with melodrama and feels overstretched, with average songs that fail to leave a mark. However, the cinematography by Kabir Lal beautifully captures the essence of Varanasi. The motivation behind the sons’ decision to abandon their father remains underexplored, leaving a gap in the narrative. While the helplessness of Patekar’s character stirs empathy and brings a lump to your throat, it falls short of delivering the emotional catharsis of films like ‘Baghban.’ Director Anil Sharma’s intentions are genuine, but the execution feels underwhelming, lacking the sharpness needed to truly resonate.

Writer-director Anil Sharma, flush from the success of Gadar 2, with a 3rd in the making, leads this supposed family drama down a long detour – which starts in Varanasi. Like Ramayana’s story of good sons and bad stepmothers and vanvaas, this tale is a Bollywood evergreen: of parents abandoned and left desolate by their children in old age.

Although Vanvaas aspires to be a deeply emotional film, the dialogues lack impact. They fail to evoke tears or heartache and occasionally veer into unintentional humour. Vanvaas is well-intentioned, but it will surely have a tough time, fighting mass entertainers Pushpa 2 and Baby John in theatres.

VBlood is not thicker than water – that’s the core of Anil Sharma’s latest directorial, Vanvaas. As the title itself suggests, the film follows the story of an elderly man who is abandoned by his children for their selfish reasons. The intention behind Vanvaas is honest but the clumsy treatment robs off its true flavours. Despite the vibrant colours, it is a hard and bitter pill to swallow.
