Sam Wilson comes into his own as Captain America in a standalone movie in the Marvel Comic Universe and the superhero franchise. Captain Amerca: Brave New World is a serviceable instalment, though the CGI remains somewhat underwhelming. The face-off between Captain America and Red Hulk is a highlight but arrives too late into the movie. Despite its convoluted plot and occasional pacing issues, Brave New World delivers thrilling aerial battles and hand-to-hand combats, strong performances, and enough spectacle to entertain superhero fans.

With Captain America: Brave New World, Marvel attempts to redefine what it means to be the star-spangled Avenger in a post-Steve Rogers world. Captain America: Brave New World is an admirable but uneven addition to the MCU. However, it struggles to escape comparisons to its predecessors, particularly The Winter Soldier, and occasionally stumbles under the weight of its own ambitions. The film has to double up its efforts to extract half the results of the OGs.

Mackie is capable and nice to have around, but he is no Chris Evans, whose star charisma could lift this material. Old Rogers buddy Buck (Stan Sebastian) pops up just to tell us why both Wilson and Evans’s Steve Rogers have their place: “Rogers gave people something to believe in, you give them something to aspire to.” Take your pick. Or, wait. Because Marvel, this 35th outing of an MCU feature notwithstanding, is certainly not done.

Captain America: Brave New World has its share of good moments. Though far pale than the glorious films of MCU, the film holds its own to quite an extent. Anthony Mackie’s superhero film sticks to the safe routine of its predecessors. The absence of an original story is sensed. Some of the jokes don’t land correctly. The punches, kicks and somersaults are formulaic. The connect Marvel Cinematic Universe has had with the fans is missing. Probably, the Avengers could only save Marvel from the ‘doomsday’.

Captain America: Brave New World is the 35th film in the MCU universe but it could also be one of the most dismal ones with middling moments of spark and surprise. Mackie does his best but the writing lets him down and ditto for Ford, who shines as the Red Hulk but the quality of the material fails to make him a solid character. Out of all the movies the MCU has made, Captain America: Brave New World is the most middling one with spurts of entertainment. But the makers need not lose heart as this is their first offering of 2025 with Thunderbolts set to follow in May and The Fantastic Four: The First Steps in July. Marvel continues its trend of releasing multiple films each year, with Deadpool & Wolverine being the only film to be released in 2024. Only if they amp up the quality.
