On the whole, Loveyapa is an entertaining fare for the youngsters mainly. It has a city flavour to it, of course. Since it stars relative newcomers, it would require time to grow by word of mouth, but the start today is so frighteningly dull that it may vanish from the cinemas without making a noise. Opening was very weak everywhere.

Loveyapa is uneven but fun, frothy but anything but pointless. It isn’t all empty talk and texting. Two worlds and impulses – virtual and real, East and West Delhi, and male proclivities and female instincts – are posited against each other in the film. Loveyapa makes no great demands on our grey cells but it isn’t, at the same time, the kind of Hindi film that lets you watch it without having to bank upon your brain. Loveyapa will probably not send you into paroxysms of delight, but it is a decent enough film while it lasts.

To make a modern rom-com remains the bane of Bollywood: Loveyapa proves all over again just how difficult it is to create a cracking love story which truly captures the essence of today’s swipe-right-and-left generation. The real film kicks in well into the second half, much after the listless toing-and-froing of the pre-interval portion between the two leads who cutely call each other Baani Boo, and Baboo. Ooo.

Director Advait Chandan beautifully shows how, in this digital age, everything has become an option for Gen Z. On the whole, Loveyapa is a joyful entertainer, which has all the elements of being a perfect rom-com along with a subtle yet strong message.

The message in Loveyapa is clear – adapt to the new ways, but do not fall prey to its shortcomings. Loveyapa is an important film for this generation. Not just does it deserve a chance on the big screen, it also deserves to be talked about. If not for anything else, then for its sheer good intention.
