But, this is also a show which knows how to go for the jugular: its stakes are high, and if someone has to be sacrificed in the telling, so be it. Season one’s murkiness came from familiar tropes; this new season is a brave step up. A murder which is political, leading to an excavation of the politics of the place, through an intensely personal lens, is one of the ways to create memorable fiction, and the Avinash Arun-Sudip Sharma team knows how to do it. The year has barely begun, and Paatal Lok 2 bids fair to be amongst the best of 2025.

Five years after its groundbreaking debut, Paatal Lok returns to Prime Video with a second season that reaffirms the series as one of India’s most compelling crime dramas. In conclusion, Paatal Lok Season 2 is a worthy successor to its groundbreaking predecessor. It builds upon the elements that made Season 1 a standout—gritty realism, nuanced characters, and sharp social commentary—while expanding its scope and ambition. The result is a series that is as thought-provoking as it is thrilling, a rare blend of entertainment and introspection but with a dash of shock value that might leave you emotionally exhausted and broken.

Created by Sudip Sharma and directed by Avinsh Arun Dhaware, Paatal Lok 2 throws shades of The Adventures of Tintin. But it’s not flawless. Season one in 2020 tackled a theme that can never go dated. Its meticulous gaze at the decaying notion of journalism is infinitely pertinent. A sense of connect is instant. Season two does make a fine attempt at the representation of a community not often portrayed with conviction, the journey to the finish line isn’t seamless. What it does get right is the aching realization how ultimately it’s every man for himself, especially for humans like Hathiram. And death is inevitable. Only if there was a dog to save the day here too!

Directed by Avinash Arun Dhaware and produced by Anushka Sharma, the show’s greatest strength lies in its originality and realism. If the first season of ‘Paatal Lok’ gave us a chilling peek into the moral decay of society, its second season plunges us into an entirely new abyss—darker, murkier, and riddled with fresh complexities. While treading a different path, the show retains its gripping core: an unrelenting search for truth in a world marred by deceit and corruption.

It has been almost five years since a bunch of viewers, locked in their houses, were introduced to Paatal Lok, and the brilliance of Jaideep Ahlawat. It was the time when OTT shows had more spunk and rawness. Paatal Lok season 2 is a significant departure from the first season. While it might lack several elements that the audience loved in the first, it also adds more layers and nuance to a number of sensitive issues pertaining to the north-east (Nagaland to be specific). It bravely ventures into a zone that many would just cower to approach. For that reason and many more in between, this one, most definitely, deserves a watch.
